ASSIGNMENT 01 - DOCUMENTATION
This assignment called for a documentation of the East Falls Bridge, through photographs and detailed drawings. Once the site was thoroughly documented, a new perspective of the bridge was to be created through combining photos taken at the same spot. Photographic and drawing skills were tested as well as the ability to visualize and create a new viewpoint from a set structure.
ASSIGNMENT 02 - MANIPULATION
Using the different editing tools in photoshop, four pictures of the East Falls bridge were to be taken and manipulated in order to showcase a quality feature of this structure. The four pictures chosen here were edited with the intention of highlighting the liner movement this bridge possess. From the harsh linear progression of the structure off into the distance to the cars traveling through it, the East Falls bridge showcases movement even in a still photograph.
ASSIGNMENT 03 - COLLAGE
Both photographic and hand drawn documentation provide the designer with the tools they need to fully understand a structure. This assignment blends these two mediums together to represent the East Falls bridge in a new way and to highlight certain elements. The cross structure was repeated even in the smallest of places, so these photos showcase key features of this bridge by pulling the strong details of the cross brace with rendered drawings.
ASSIGNMENT 04 - REPRESENTATION I
In design, representing an object is highly important in order for a larger audience to understand all the parts that go into it. An eyeshadow palette was chosen to be documented in plan, elevation, and axonometric views. The documentation was hand drawn and dimensions where added later in Illustrator in order to further explain the different elements of this object.
ASSIGNMENT 05 - REPRESENTATION II
Being able to represent objects clearly through other mediums is a skill that is needed in order to understand which medium is the best to present the work in. Moving from hand drawn to digital can loose some of the layers of information that hand drawing provides. The balance of line weights becomes very important when drawing in AutoCAD because the designer’s personal touch to a hand drawing can become lost. This object of an eyeshadow palette is represented in plan, section, and elevation with varying line weights to help the viewer better understand each feature.
ASSIGNMENT 06 - VECTORS
To fully understand an object, a designer must consider how all the pieces work together and one way to envision it is through vectors. From a flat 2-dimensional photo to a landscape with many changes in elevation, the whole area can be mapped out using the idea of layers and vectors. Giving the different vectors a hierarchy shows what is most important about the object through a variation of line weights and shapes created in Adobe Illustrator. The contrast between the very simply drawn face and body, and the highly detailed, colorful hair shows a hierarchy of space and therefore making the hair the focal point of the presentation.
ASSIGNMENT 07 - FREE SWIM
This assignment allowed for the designer to go back on an old project and fix the mistakes they made previously. Project 04 (Representation I) had many errors such as poor hand drawing techniques and confusing labeling. Going back and spending the time to make the drawings more precise and not rendered improved the quality of the representation as a whole and made it easier for the audience to understand.
CONSTRUCTS I
For this project, the designer needed to take three photographs and edit them on photoshop. It was also required to “clean-up” any construction mistakes, like rough edges or croaked walls, to represent the model in the best way possible to those who cannot view it in real life.
CONSTRUCTS II
This assignment called for the designer to use photoshop as a rendering tool instead of just a photo-editer. The goal was to make the finished products look as real as possible, so keeping realistic angles and materials was important.
NARRATIVE II
This group assignment called for each group to produce a presentation board on a building they were previously assigned; this group was assigned the Blur Building. The main focus was to convey the mist-like feeling of the building with design elements on the board.
NARRATIVE III
For this assignment, each designer was to take the design firm that designed the building they researched in the previous project and create a publication of what their firm stands for. Diller Scofidio + Renfro was the firm that made the Blur Building and all of their works contain a blending of visual art, performance art, and architecture.
REDUX
This project required the designer to draw a section perspective of their current design project and render using the tools they learned in this class throughout the semester.
